Our Year 5 English Course provides a complete, structured programme of learning for the full academic year. It is ideal for home-educated students, independent learners and families looking for additional English support.
The course is divided into six termly units, each based around an engaging text:
The Queen of the Falls
The Lost Happy Endings
Arthur and the Golden Rope
Malala’s Magic Pencil
The Brilliant Deep
The Hunter
Using these texts as inspiration, students will develop their reading, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and writing skills. They will explore characters, settings, events and important themes while learning how authors use language to engage their readers.
Throughout the course, students complete a varied selection of activities and writing tasks. These include diary entries, letters, postcards, descriptions, recounts, reports and imaginative narratives. They will learn how to identify the audience and purpose of a piece of writing, organise ideas into effective paragraphs and adapt their language for different formats.
Key areas of learning include:
Using expanded noun phrases to add description and detail
Organising writing into clear paragraphs
Using fronted adverbials and commas correctly
Selecting suitable conjunctions to connect ideas
Maintaining consistent and accurate verb forms
Applying punctuation accurately
Planning, drafting, proofreading and improving written work
Students are encouraged to develop their ideas gradually through guided activities before completing more independent pieces of writing. Additional challenges provide opportunities for confident writers to explore alternative viewpoints and create more detailed responses.
Regular self-assessments help students recognise their progress and identify any skills that require further practice. Guidance is provided throughout, helping students understand what to work on next and encouraging them to become more confident and independent learners.
Enrolment also includes access to our live mentoring sessions. Students can ask questions, request help with a particular skill and receive further explanations and guidance from an experienced tutor.
Designed to be completed flexibly across the academic year, the course builds a secure foundation in Year 5 English and prepares students for the expectations of Year 6.
